Chris Hemsworth hates capes and calls superhero roles a ‘predictable box’

Chris Hemsworth is pretty happy he won’t be playing the hero in George Miller’s upcoming “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel film “Furiosa.” In the action tentpole, Hemsworth plays the evil Dementus, a sociopathic warlord who steals the title character from her home as a child. It’s a far cry from his Marvel superhero Thor, who Hemsworth played in four standalone films and several more “Avengers” films. That’s exactly why the actor was hungry for the role.

“Yes, it was a real departure, and it was fun. …I was about to say it was nice not to have a cape, but…I did have a cape in this movie, ‘Hemsworth recently told Entertainment Weekly. ‘And it’s red – or it ends up being red. The absurdity from that.”

The “Furiosa” cape was “not intended as a comparison to Thor,” Hemsworth emphasized, “but I thought it was a wonderful premise: playing the villain, transforming and inhabiting a completely different physicality was a lot of fun.” I loved it. And it was the real attraction.”

The actor added that while he wanted to work with George Miller, another selling point for “Furiosa” was the desire “to dirty it up and be messy and ugly and violent and chaotic, rather than in the somewhat predictable box of hero to sit. in a superhero room. There are a lot of rules you have to adhere to [with that]. This allowed me to throw that out the window, which was nice.”

Hemsworth’s co-star Anya Taylor-Joy then asked him: “Are they annoying after years of capes?”

‘Hate them. So impractical,” Hemsworth replied.

Hemsworth recently told Vanity Fair that “it’s been a long time coming” to get the chance to show more than just his “muscular action man” chops, which he’s done as Thor in the MCU and in films like the Netflix franchise “Extraction.”

“Furiosa” opens in theaters May 24 from Warner Bros. after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Go to Entertainment Weekly’s website to read Hemsworth and Taylor-Joy’s full cover story on “Furiosa.”
