Woman dead, man seriously injured after basement fire in Toronto home – Toronto

Toronto police say a woman is dead and a man has life-threatening injuries after a basement fire at a home Wednesday.

Police said the fire happened just after midnight on Rusholme Road, near College and Dufferin streets.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and fire were coming from the basement, the Toronto Fire Department said.

After a search and rescue operation, fire officials said two people were rescued from the home by firefighters.

Paramedics told Global News that one person died at the scene and the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Another three people were assessed.
