Whoopi Goldberg says “The View” isn’t what it used to be — and explains that audiences are willing to jump on the hosts for every little comment they make…regardless of intent.
The EGOT winner – who joined the show in 2007 – opened up about hosting during a sit-down with Chris Wallace during his interview show…and he asked her if she would like to moderate the program.
Goldberg says she previously liked “The View” better because the audience didn’t inform the hosts or immediately jump to the conclusion that they wanted to make nasty, terrible comments.
Whoopi explains that in its heyday there was more debate: a free exchange of ideas about the hosts’ opinions, without too much finger-pointing. Now she feels like people are playing more of the “Gotcha” game…that they’re more concerned with the language than what the presenter means.
WG says she feels like she always hedges her comments instead of saying how she really feels… because she’s not trying to piss people off.
Wallace then asks her if she has any grievances she wants to express – and, Whoopi jokes, there would be no point in saying how she really feels.
‘View’ hosts these days are known for courting controversy…recently on everything from Donald Trump‘s candidacy for calls the song “Jolene” anti-feminist — they’re not afraid to say what they feel. Still, it feels like Whoopi is saying, “The View” has woken up.
It feels like there’s a bit of irony in this sentiment… but we’ll leave that conversation to Twitter.
