United Nations launches polio vaccine campaign in Gaza

The World Health Organization’s top representative in Gaza said Israel agreed to temporarily suspend its military operations in designated areas during the hours when vaccines were to be administered to children.

A two-round polio vaccination campaign will actually start on September 1. It is crucial that we achieve a 90 percent vaccination rate. You need 90 percent plus to stop the outbreak and transmission within Gaza and prevent international spread. We have a tentative commitment for area-specific humanitarian pauses during the campaign. So it will be three days in a central zone, where necessary we add a day, three days in the south where necessary we add a day, and three days in the north. You will do the second round within four weeks. When we start this process, we must also complete this process. So the assumption for WHO and UNICEF partners is that of course we will. We will definitely do the second round as well.
