Trae Tha Truth recently spoke out in support of J. Cole, who decided to keep his distance from the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar dispute. Also known as Frazier Other Thompson III, he is a rapper known for albums like Same, different day, And Stuck in motion.
While appearing at the 2024 BET Awards, Trae spoke to AllHipHop and stated that he watched the news reporting that J. Cole was seemingly trying to avoid getting involved in Kendrick Lamar’s feud with Drake. He added:
“And that wasn’t the case. What people need to realize is that this is just not the kind of energy that brother got. Do you know what I mean? He focused on him, he focused on his kids and just always stayed on his path.”
Trae Tha Truth referenced J. Cole by saying that people wanted to “watch him mess around” without knowing that they all grew up together. He claimed they were partners and continued:
“So for me, because I’m a real brother to him, you gotta have respect when someone says, ‘Man, you know what, bro? I know I’m dope. I don’t doubt myself. I just feel like that’s just not the case.’ the energy I’m on.
On the other hand, J. Cole’s unreleased song Mom’s eyes was recently leaked on SoundCloud. While Cole didn’t share any comments or clarify anything about the track, it did appear to include his conversation with an old friend.
The duo spoke about leaving the old life and dealing with the resulting emotions in addition to the feeling of loneliness.
J. Cole responded to Kendrick Lamar’s verses on Like that before the latter gets into a fight with Drake
Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s beef stemmed from the latter’s collaboration with J. Cole on a single titled First-person shooter. Cole referred to himself alongside Kendrick and Drake in the lyrics stating:
“I love it when they argue the loudest / Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me? / We’re the big three like we started a competition / But right now I feel like Muhammad Ali.”
Kendrick later made a guest appearance on Future and Metro Boomin’s album We don’t trust you, where his lyrics took aim at Drake and Cole. Cole then responded by recording a song titled 7 minutes of exercise in his fourth mixtape, May delete laterand referred to Lamar by knocking:
“He still does shows, but fell off like ‘The Simpsons’ / Your first sh*t was classic, your last sh*t was tragic / Your second sh*t put n*ggas to sleep, but they gassed it up / You third sh*t It was huge and that was your highlight / I was right behind and I just now hit mine.
Might Delete Later had 11 more songs in the soundtrack and received positive response from critics and audiences. While Lamar and Drake’s feud is now over, J. Cole apologized to Lamar a few days after releasing his mixtape.
During his performance at the Dreamville Festival on April 7, 2024, he described 7 minutes of exercise as the “lamest sh*t” he did in his life and added:
“I was conflicted because: one, I know my heart and I know how I feel about my peers. These two niggas I just stood next to in this game, let alone chasing their greatness. So I feel me conflicted because I’m like, bruh, I don’t even feel like it.”
J. Cole also appreciated Lamar’s work as a rapper over the years, adding that he expects forgiveness for everything he has done as he felt terrible for it. Despite his apology receiving negative feedback, Cole said the track would be removed from streaming platforms.
