Supreme Court rules that rioter will contest obstruction charge on January 6

Evidence shows that on January 6, Fischer joined the mob that breached the Capitol chanting “Charge!” called out. and later tried to appeal to Capitol Police by saying he was an officer, too.

Historically, the Supreme Court — which has a 6-3 conservative majority — has been cautious about allowing prosecutors to apply criminal law provisions broadly. Friday’s ruling was in line with this approach, which apparently aims to limit the scope of the obstruction law.
