Emmy predictions for 2024:
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Weekly Commentary (updated: June 17, 2024): In 2022, the TV Academy set a record for supporting drama actor submissions with 436. Judging from 2023’s 346 names, we are left with 217 contenders in the awards discussion, compared to supporting drama actresses with 196. That leaves seven nominees in every category.
Both categories have multiple candidates from the same shows, such as “The Crown” (Khalid Abdalla, Salim Daw, Jonathan Pryce, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Olivia Williams) and “The Morning Show” (Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Jon Hamm, Greta Lee, Audra McDonald, Julianna Margulies, Holland Taylor and Karen Pittman). Let’s not forget the largest ensemble to ever land a SAG nomination, HBO’s period drama “The Gilded Age,” which planned to submit thirteen supporting players but ended up with only five players on the roster (Ben Ahlers, Nathan Lane, Robert Sean Leonard, Blake Ritson and John Douglas Thompson).
FX’s “Shо̄gun” is an embarrassment of riches led by Tadanobu Asano and the possibility of two of his co-stars joining him, Takehiro Hira and Tokuma Nishioka. We’ll see if the TV Academy Real loves the epic series.
Is there room for a few surprises? Of course it’s the Emmys. Watch out for Benedict Wong of Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” or Jack Lowden of “Slow Horses,” who could appear alongside his leading co-star Gary Oldman.
Voting in the nomination round opens on June 13 and closes on June 24 at 10:00 PM PT. Voting for peer group-specific top ten round panels (if applicable) will take place between June 28 and July 8. The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 17. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies will take place over two evenings on September 7. 8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards airs Sunday, September 15 on ABC.

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Founded in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are divided into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performance and Production; the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship; and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which recognize significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period generally runs from June 1 to May 31 of each year. The Television Academy hosts the Emmys and has more than 20,000 members across 30 professional groups, including artists, directors, producers, art directors, artisans and executives.
