The question of whether ransomware payments should be banned is a hotly debated topic in cybersecurity and policy circles. What are the consequences of banning these payments, and would the ban be effective?

In May, we spoke out about Britain’s apparent plan to make it illegal for critical infrastructure entities to pay ransomware attackers. The measure is said to be intended to deter cybercriminals from targeting vital services.

Two months later, the subject makes the news again. If Security Intelligence is now reportingJen Easterly, director of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), said: “I don’t think I see it happening within our system in the US – just from a practical perspective.”

Now that opinions seem to differ, what are the wider implications of an apparent lack of a global strategy on how to deal with ransomware payments? And how does cyber insurance play a role, and what is the relevance of CISAs Safe by design initiative (that ESET has also signed) in this context? Watch Tony’s video to find out.
