The ‘Nurse Jackie’ sequel series is now in development at Amazon Prime Video and original star Edie Falco is returning. Variety only learned.

It was first reported in 2023 that a sequel to ‘Nurse Jackie’ was in the works at Lionsgate Television’s Showtime, but the project has now moved to Amazon.

The official logline reads: “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet despite losing her nursing license. As her story continues, she will face new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but much more fun.

Liz Flahive (“GLOW,” “Homeland”) and Abe Sylvia (“Palm Royale,” “George & Tammy”) serve as writers and executive producers on the sequel series, and both served as producers and writers on the original series. Sylvia is also attached to directing. Falco will also executive produce alongside Bob Greenblatt, the former head of Showtime, NBC, and WarnerMedia Entertainment turned producer. Lionsgate Television, which produced the original series, is the studio.

Falco is repped by CAA and Entertainment 360. Sylvia is repped by CAA, Gartner Group Entertainment, Lichter, Grossman and Origin Public Relations. Flahive is repped by WME, Kaplan Perrone and Schreck Rose.

The original “Nurse Jackie” aired on Showtime for seven seasons between 2009 and 2015. It served as Falco’s first major starring vehicle after “The Sopranos” and received critical acclaim. Falco herself received six Emmy nominations for her time on the series, winning Best Actress in a Comedy in 2010. She was also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for the series. The show itself received a total of 24 Emmy nominations during its run, with cast member Merritt Wever winning the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy in 2013.

The cast also included Eve Best, Peter Facinelli, Anna Deavere Smith, Betty Gilpin, Haaz Sleiman, Dominic Fumusa, Paul Schulze and Dominic Fumusa. The series was originally created by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem and Evan Dunksy.

The fact that “Nurse Jackie” is moving from Showtime to Amazon isn’t entirely surprising given the current state of Showtime’s original programming. Once a powerhouse of scripted shows — including titles like “Nurse Jackie,” “Homeland,” “Weed,” “Dexter” and “Shameless” — Showtime now has only a handful of series on the air. This is accompanied by the fact that the premium cabler was renamed Paramount+ in 2023 with Showtime. Paramount executives had previously indicated that they were developing several new shows for the network based on existing IP, including a “Dexter” prequel and multiple spinoffs of “Billions.”
