San Francisco airport prepares for summer travel season, BA News, BA

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) showcased the start of the summer travel season by providing passengers with advice, parking details, recently completed facilities and a schedule of live music in the terminals.

The summer travel season begins on Friday, May 24, 2024, with approximately 147,000 passengers expected to travel through SFO. A total of 15.5 million travelers are expected at SFO from Memorial Day to Labor Day, representing about 86 percent of pre-pandemic summer travel levels.

SFO suggests that travelers should reserve extra time. Passengers traveling during the summer season are advised to reach the airport at least 2 hours before their domestic flight and 3 hours before their international flight.

The parking garages are expected to be full, so it is advisable to book in advance.

SFO expects parking garages to be full or nearly full during the summer season. SFO suggests that travelers use public transportation or carpool to the airport. As for parking, the airport suggests that travelers reserve a parking space in advance through SFO’s online booking system. This system allows users to select their parking dates and times and enter payment details to complete a booking in advance.

The runway closure for the construction project will last until July 1 and delays are possible.

The closure of runway 28 left for a taxiway improvement project is expected to be completed by July 1. Airlines have already reduced the number of flights to adapt to the shutdown. However, SFO is advising travelers that delays may occur until the runway reopens on July 1.

The final phase of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 will open on June 11 and Alaska Airlines will move into it.

The final phase of the $2.4 billion Harvey Milk Terminal 1 will open on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. It will include a new check-in area, a mezzanine security checkpoint easily accessible from the AirTrain system, two additional gates, five new concessions, a shared use lounge, a museum gallery and a connecting corridor connecting all SFO terminals after security with connects each other.

Alaska Airlines plans to transfer its entire operations, such as check-in, gates and baggage services, from Terminal 2 to Harvey Milk Terminal 1 by the end of June. Alaska will be close to American Airlines and other Oneworld member airlines, offering guests convenience with connecting domestic and international flights.

Alaska’s new lobby will feature cutting-edge technology to help guests navigate the check-in process more efficiently, giving them extra time to relax in the new lounge (also opening this summer) and enjoy the new amenities at Harvey Milk Terminal 1 .

The Terminal 3 West project has started and United will operate additional flights in Terminal 2.

In July, San Francisco International Airport will officially launch the $2.5 billion Terminal 3 West Modernization Project. This project aims to upgrade the current 500,000-square-foot western portion of Terminal 3 with improvements such as a seismic retrofit, an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities.

Additionally, the project will generate an additional 250,000 square feet of space, allowing for the expansion of food, beverage and retail options. During this project, United Airlines will expand its flight operations at Terminal 2, while temporary walkways will be introduced to guide passengers through the construction zone.
