Safety expert urges caution around water as construction holiday begins in Quebec – Montreal

As Quebecers begin their vacations, many gather around swimming pools and various bodies of water to enjoy the sunny weather.

But the Quebec chapter of the Life Saving Society says this is also the time of year when most drownings occur.

So far this year, 32 Quebecers have died in drowning incidents, although that total is down from 44 this time last year.

The Quebec Society says one of the best tips it gives to people is don’t try to go into, near or on the water alone.

“More than 50 percent of drowning victims in the past five years were alone,” said Raynald Hawkins, executive director of the Life Saving Society’s operations in Quebec.

“It doesn’t matter what the gender, age, water or boating activity is. Because no one can call 911, no one can try to reach or help and no one can explain the true story of the drowning.”

Another big message that the lifesaving society wants to convey is for parents.

Hawkins says it only takes 15 to 20 seconds for a toddler to drown, which is why adults should supervise their children at all times.

“The best lifeguard, the best person to supervise the child at all times, is you,” Hawkins said. “So please inform another adult, not the big sisters and big brothers. Okay, for the next 15 minutes you will be on your guard: the lifeguard. You’re going to supervise. No distractions, no duties other than supervision.”

Hawkins also stressed the importance of always wearing a life jacket when on the water, and of drinking alcohol until you get back to shore.
