With a view to future expansion and to streamline development, the Airport Authority of India has finalized the Bhopal Airport Master Plan to be implemented in three phases by 2047: Phase 1, Phase 2 and Ultimate Capacity.

To reach the airport’s final capacity, the runway will be extended to a length of 4,000 meters. The expansion requires the purchase of approximately 65 hectares of additional land. The concerned authority has already sought state approval for the acquisition of the land. The expansion is crucial to accommodate the expected growth in air traffic and ensure that the airport can meet the demands of the future.

“The master plan has been carefully crafted to meet the long-term needs of Bhopal Airport. It takes into account the expected increase in passenger and freight traffic and the need for improved infrastructure and facilities. The three-phase approach enables a systematic approach. and efficient implementation of development projects,” said airport director Ramjee Awasthi.

Phase 1 will focus on improving existing infrastructure and facilities to meet the immediate needs of the airport. This could involve expanding the terminal building, building new parking lots and upgrading air traffic control systems. These improvements will help streamline operations and provide a better experience for passengers.

Phase 2 will involve more significant changes to the airport’s layout and infrastructure. This could include the construction of new taxiways, aprons and hangars to accommodate the growing number of aircraft. The terminal building can also be further expanded to accommodate increased passenger traffic. These developments will help position Bhopal Airport as a key hub in the region. In the final phase – Ultimate Capacity – to be achieved in 2047, the airport will reach its full potential. The extension of the runway to 4000 m is a crucial part of this phase. The longer runway will allow larger aircraft to operate from the airport, opening up new routes and destinations. It will also enable the airport to handle more flights, both domestic and international.
