Met Gala 2024: The Most Bold, Dazzling and Outrageous Red Carpet Looks – National

It’s fashion’s biggest night, as Hollywood’s brightest stars descend on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for this year’s Met Gala.

The theme of this year’s annual fundraiser is “The garden of time,‘ is inspired by a short story of the same name, written by JG Ballard in 1962. The fashion elite are applauding the theme, saying it is wide open to interpretation and that onlookers can expect to see plenty of floral, AI-inspired and vintage pieces.

Held annually on the first Monday in May, the Met Gala is a soirée to raise money for the Costume Institute, the museum’s collection of fashion objects. Each year a different theme honors a designer, style or look.

This year’s museum exhibition, which the stars are touring on Monday evening, is called Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Reawakening. But we’re not talking about fairy tales or Disney princesses.

It contains 250 items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, including some garments that are very rarely seen in public and are so fragile that they must be kept under glass. Curators wanted to appeal to all senses, including that of smell. They even worked with a “fragrance artist” – and there is a piece of clothing that actually grows. Part of the idea is to pay tribute to the natural world.

Apart from the red carpet, which attracts worldwide attention, it is an event shrouded in secrecy. Once the guests enter, there are strict rules around cell phones and social media, which adds to the allure; the audience gets a minimal glimpse of what’s really happening among the A-listers in attendance.

Anna Wintour, a Met trustee for whom part of the institute was renamed, is organizing the whole thing. And this year, she’s invited a notable list of co-chairs, including Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth.
