More than 330 million people in 27 countries that make up the European Union vote for their representatives in the European Parliament, the bloc’s only directly elected body.

Note: The number of seats at country level is an estimate based on available exit polls and other unofficial data from Member States. Counts may change as more results are reported.

The vote is important to set the political tone in the EU for the next five years, and could determine how major issues such as migration are tackled. The European Parliament approves EU laws and international treaties and plays an important role in monitoring spending.

Election results are announced country by country and voting is organized according to national rules. It is expected that the top positions will go to the conservative and social democratic groups, just as they did in the last elections five years ago.
