Dyson’s latest piece of hair technology is now available to purchase. The brand’s new hair dryer, the Supersonic Nural, joins the ranks of illustrious brands such as the Supersonic, the Corrale, the Airstrait and the Airwrap.
The Nural is named after the sensors that help provide heat protection. Here’s everything you need to know, including where to buy it and what it costs.
What is the Dyson Supersonic Nural?
The Supersonic Nural is a follow-up to the original Supersonic hair dryer, launched in 2016, and the Supersonic r, a redesign aimed at hair professionals, announced earlier this year.
The big change from the original Supersonic is that the Nural has several technologies that aim to protect the scalp and hair from intense heat.
Where can you buy the Supersonic Nural and how much does it cost?
At the moment, the Supersonic Nural is only available directly from Dyson in both the US and UK.
If you are in the US, visit Dyson.com or a physical Dyson Demo Store if there is one near you. It’s available in Vinca Blue & Topaz and Ceramic Patina & Topaz, although the latter colorway is out of stock at the time of writing. It costs $499.99.
In the UK you can buy Dyson’s Nural online or from Dyson Demo Stores. It comes in two colorways: Vinca Blue & Topaz and Ceramic Patina & Topaz. It costs £399.99.
What functions does the Dyson Nural have?
If you tried the original Supersonic, the Nural will look familiar. It has the same hammer-shaped construction and magnetic mountings.
But there are upgrades. For starters, it’s lighter and more compact than its predecessor.
It also has a clear cap on the end so you can take a look at its internal workings.
Then there are the lights, which act as a kind of thermal traffic light system. Like the Supersonic, it has an opening that runs through the center of the drying head. However, unlike the original, there is a luminous capsule inside, which changes color, from blue to yellow, orange and then bright red, as a visual temperature indicator.
Turn on the hairdryer’s ‘scalp protection’ mode and the built-in time-of-flight sensors measure the distance from the device to your head and lower the temperature until it reaches a comfortable – and crucially non-scalp frying – temperature.°C /131°F when you are close to your hair.
It also has the pause function of the original model: when you put the hairdryer down, it automatically stops until you are ready to dry your hair again. Pick it up and it will restart.
The filter is easy to remove and you can wash it in warm soapy water so that it is free of dust, hair and styling products.
Like the Supersonic r, it comes with intelligent attachments with recommended airflow and heat settings, which you can then adjust. The clever thing is that a sensor on the dryer recognizes the attachment and uses the adjusted settings when you reattach it.
The Nural comes with Dyson’s groundbreaking fly attachment, a gentle air attachment, a styling concentrator, a wide tooth comb and a wave and curl diffuser. The diffuser has two different modes: diffuse (for volume) and dome (to help define curls). The updated attachments make the Nural a better option for those with curly or frizzy hair.
You can use attachments from the original model and they will work, but they are not compatible with the new intelligent system.
