Comments about Biden’s 2024 Correspondents’ Dinner inflame Donald Trump

Joe Biden took some criticism of his rival Donald Trump, but he devoted much of his comments to the grave threat to democracy.

“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You could call it stormy weather,” Biden joked, referring to Trump’s current hush money lawsuit.

The president also addressed reports that Trump fell asleep during his trial, calling him “sleepy Don.”

“Trump’s speech was so embarrassing that the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered again,” he said.

However, the president devoted much of his speech to warning about the threat to democracy and the role of the press in a free society.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher,” Biden said. “Each of us has a role to play, a serious role, to ensure that democracy survives. American democracy,” Biden said. “…In an age of disinformation, credible information that people can trust is more important than ever. That makes you, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart, that makes you more important than ever.”

More to come.
