Borderlands movie didn’t even cover 1/4 its production cost

The Borderlands movie has finished its theatrical run and managed to make over $30 million USD… against a budget of $130 million.

After making about $8.6 million in its opening weekend, the movie chugged along in theaters over the past month. Many fans criticized the use of live-action for a game that’s known for its humor, slapstick, and cartoonish aesthetic.

The movie featured Cate Blanchett as Lillith alongside other Hollywood stars like Kevin Hart and Jack Black. According to Gamesindustry.biz, the film also spent around $30 million on advertising alone. Which if that’s true, means the movie’s production was done almost entirely at a loss.

However despite the film’s lack of success, Gearbox announced a fourth game in the series.
