Billy Zane says emotional acting can be just as difficult as high-flying physical stunts… arguing that both take their toll on the body – so performers should be paid fairly for each.
The actor sat down for a recent conversation with Entertainment weekly where he reflected on playing the title character in Lifetime’s “Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story” … and he says playing the convicted sex trafficker had a negative impact on his psyche.
BZ says that even playing a role – second-hand diving into the darkness – is a lot for actors… adding that the body recognizes all the chemical reactions it goes through, and it affects you physically, so a few extra dollars isn’t necessary. out of line.
As for the old saying that actors can’t judge their subjects… Zane calls out a bit of BS here – explaining that it’s impossible not to judge someone like Larry, but that doesn’t mean he can ignore the thoughts running through his head go can’t understand. head.
BTW…Billy says he also physically changed his body for the role – he gained a ton of weight to play Larry, and told EW he ground sugar to add the extra pounds he needed.
If you don’t know… Larry Ray moved in with his daughter at Sarah Lawrence after he got out of prison – and he was later accused of starting a ‘sex cult’ of her friends.
He was convicted of 15 criminal counts in April 2022 and sentenced to 60 years in prison last year.
‘Devil on Campus’ premieres on Lifetime Sunday … and it sounds like it will be an emotional event for audiences.
