Barcelona star weighing his options as clearout continues, could leave club if suitable offer is made

Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen is reportedly willing to leave the club this summer if a suitable offer comes his way. This is evident from a report by Mundo Deportivo who claims the Denmark international may not get a meaningful role under new coach Hansi Flick.

It was Inigo Martinez who partnered Pau Cubarsi in central defense in the Blaugrana’s first league match of the season against Valencia on Saturday (August 17). This could mean that the former Chelsea player will not get regular playing minutes this season.

Therefore, he believes that a departure is possible if an offer meets his demands and ambitions for the future. According to this report, Premier League team Newcastle United have expressed interest in the 28-year-old defender, who has experience of playing in England.

This looks like a good prospect for Christensen as the Magpies look to challenge for the European spots in this year’s Premier League. Moreover, he can push the likes of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn into a starting position as a central defender.

With two years left on his contract at Camp Nou, a move will not be easy for the Danish defender. He joined the club from Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

Since then, he has made 75 league appearances for the Catalan club, scoring four goals and three assists. Christensen won the 2022/23 La Liga trophy with Barcelona.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has shown his commitment to playing as a centre-back or right-back as the new La Liga season approaches. In his team’s first game of the season, the France international was deployed as a wing-back.

This is the position Kounde has operated in of late for both club and country. However, the 25-year-old has made it clear that he is more than happy to play a central role as well. He said (via the club’s official website):

“I go where the team needs me. I spoke to the coach and told him that I feel comfortable in both positions.”

Despite playing as a wing-back for most of last season, the Frenchman said centre-back is his preferred position. It will be interesting to see where he plays on Saturday (August 24) in Barcelona’s next league match against Athletic Club.
