A Bangladeshi student studying at the National Institute of Technology, Silchar in Assam, was sent back to her country after she responded with a ‘love’ emoji to an anti-India social media post, police said on Tuesday (August 27) .

Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta claimed it was “not a deportation” but had just been returned in consultation with Bangladesh authorities.

The SP said Maisha Mahajabin, a fourth semester student of Electronics and Communications Department of NIT Silchar, was sent back to Bangladesh through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district on Monday.

“This is not a case of deportation… She responded with a love symbol in an anti-India post on Facebook by her senior and NIT Silchar alumnus Sahadat Hussain Alfi, who left India about six months ago after completing his course. He now lives in Bangladesh,” Ms. Mahatta said PTI.

The SP claimed that many people expressed their anger upon seeing such a message, to which she responded with a ‘love’ emoji.

Mrs. Mahatta also stated that Mahajabin had requested the authorities of NIT Silchar to allow her to go to her country.

When asked whether she will return to complete her studies, the SP says: “She has not yet completed her education. Whether she will return again to complete her studies, nothing can be said now.” A total of 70 Bangladeshi students are currently studying at NIT Silchar, as per the insights of the Indian and Bangladeshi governments.

Ms Mahatta said among them there are around 40 Hindu students from Bangladesh at NIT Silchar.

“I personally met the students and requested them not to do any wrong work or engage in anti-India activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hindu Rakkhi Dal spokesperson Suvasish Choudhury told PTI that they had noticed the anti-India post of the former student and informed the police to take necessary steps.

“We have forwarded some anti-India messages from Rajshahi University in Bangladesh. She (Mahajabin) supported such a message with a love symbol,” he added.
