Air India has officially launched a $400 million refurbishment program to modernize 67 of its older aircraft, starting with the Airbus A320neo fleet. The extensive refit aims to deliver a new in-flight experience, with an improved cabin interior, updated seats and a refreshed livery, in line with the airline’s transformation into a world-class airline.

The initiative will start with 27 Airbus A320neo aircraft, followed by 40 widebody Boeing aircraft, and is expected to be completed in phases. The first A320neo aircraft, VT-EXN, has already entered the hangar for prototyping and regulatory approvals, and will return to service in December 2024. The retrofit of the narrowbody fleet is expected to be completed by mid-2025, with three to four aircraft being refurbished every month.

The newly redesigned A320neo aircraft will feature a modern cabin configuration with three classes: 8 seats in Business, 24 in Premium Economy and 132 in Economy. Key highlights include wider seats, improved legroom and more personal space. Additional modern features such as portable electronic device (PED) holders, USB charging ports (both Type A and C) and ergonomic seats suit today’s tech-savvy traveler.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said, “The interior refurbishment of our narrowbody fleet is a critical step towards delivering a superior customer experience. The upgrade of all our older widebody aircraft will follow, marking another milestone in Air India’s transformation into a world-class airline.”

In Business Class, passengers can enjoy 40-inch seats with a 7-inch reclining seat, adjustable armrests, footrests and backrests. Premium Economy will feature 32-inch pitch seats, 4-inch recline and enhanced headrests, while Economy Class will offer 28 to 29 inches of seat pitch with ample legroom and upgraded amenities. At the same time, Air India is preparing for a complete interior overhaul of its widebody Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft. This includes the installation of new seats and on-board entertainment systems, with production expected to start in early 2025.

With a focus on delivering industry-leading comfort across all cabin classes, the project will include the installation of more than 15,000 next-generation seats in partnership with renowned global OEMs such as Collins, Astronics and Thales.
